Price gouging due to COVID-19 fears

I was at Canadian Tire and saw 50 pack of three ply face masks (useless at preventing the spread of the Covid-19 virus) at $29.99. Was shocked to see a major Canadian retailer take advantage of the Covid-19 scare. Actually it quite infuriated me. What has everyone seen out there? Please don't include third party sellers on retail websites who are trying to make a quick buck.

Supply and demand. I've had ceramic filters in my wishlist on Amazon for months, suddenly gone from $17 to $21. Other of that sort of stuff gone up as well. Did warn of this in the COVID-19 thread nearly a month ago.

This isn't necessarily price gouging. Here's a snippet from the NY Times from a month ago:
Get used to seeing more shortages and price increases on an increasing number of products that we rely on that are made in China, Korea and other embargoed countries.

BTW those Condor masks are made in China so they're probably pre-COVID-19 stock.

Not necessarily useless but not necessary by everyone. Nevertheless that doesn't prevent mob-mentality in buying them out of misinformed fear. There was a news item on CBC TV last night showing shoppers at Costco buying toilet paper. Every shopping cart in the clip had at least one large package, many with several, i.e. enough to last for weeks. When the reporter asked why people were buying TP people in the queue said, "because everyone else is." D'oh!

This sort of misinformed hysteria and panic is going to get worse before it gets better. So get ready to open your wallets wider. Prices are going up (and up and...)

So perhaps instead of calling out Crappy Tyre for "price gouging" we should call them out for selling face masks in the first place when healthcare workers need them far more urgently than CTC's panicked mobs do.

Kijiji is even worse. 66顺彩票地址 for masks, sanitizer, etc

The prices are getting out of hand.

Very sad to see a major retailer doing it. Its capitalism and in the end it should be allowed, however shame on them.

What would you do if you had many copies of an item for sale and circumstances changed such that people were willing to pay double your ask?

Would you say "No" ... that would be gouging and just sell to the first buyer at your original price. That buyer might hoard them for herself or for future sale.

Don't like it don't buy it. It's not like it's a necessity. In fact, maybe doing a public good by discouraging use of face masks, which can even increase the odds of being infected due to improper use by most.

BTW, there's reports of sick people going around coughing on masks, toilet paper and other items people are hoarding, lol.

CT prices have always been high. So buy it when it is on sale or discounted.

Lol, normally this is good advice ...
But not in light of the current situation

Cdn Tire will indeed find a market for these ... at whatever price

Personally, I say SHAME ON THEM

If they had any true conscience they wouldn’t be selling them at all
But rather DONATING them to a local Hospital

Cuz from what I have read the shortage isn’t just in the Consumer marketplace
But is also affecting the Public Health one as well

Public Health Institutions should always come first
Vs the general population.

Standard 3-ply earloop masks sell for about $0.05 each. At full retail, they're $0.10 each.

It would be a health hazard if CT gave these crappy masks to the hospital, so I hope they don't. Nothing's changed at hospitals, so I don't see why they would need any more.
Even local walk in clinics haven't changed anything other than asking if you've been to china.

Canada, eh?
CT locations are franchises so not completely surprised.

A couple weeks or months back there was an article where they sold these masks as N95 masks which were obviously not. CT Corporate ended up reaching out to the franchise to get them to take off the misleading sign.

I get your point ... in regards to it being possibly a health hazard if CT Donated them.

And sure nothing much has changed at our hospitals ... YET

But there is a growing face mask shortage overall

So IMO it makes sense that medical personnel ... who ACTUALLY NEED THEM TO DO THEIR JOB
Should have first crack vs the general public

IMO the current situation is wrong
And distribution system of what is available ... broken

No Average Joe or Jane should be stock piling these ... that they MAY NEVER NEED OR USE

When Health Care Workers DO NEED & USE THEM ... to protect themselves and the rest of us
